D. – Lo Wei

* Türkçe’si için

Lo Wei (12 December 1918 — 20 January 1996) was a famous Hong Kong film director and film actor best known for launching the martial arts film careers of both Bruce Lee, in The Big Boss and Fist of Fury, and Jackie Chan, in New Fist of Fury. After Lee’s death it was Lo who gave Jackie Chan his first shot at the big time as part of the wave of Bruceploitation. Lo is said to have been linked with Chinese organized crime, the Triads.

He began his film career in Shanghai during World War II and he achieved stardom soon after moving to Hong Kong in 1948. He was one of the Shaw bothers‘ most prominent filmmakers between 1964 and 1970 with nearly twenty features as director-actor. Especially, he directed (sometimes played in small roles) many beatiful wuxia gems starring with Yueh Hua and Cheng Pei Pei.

After 1979, he next moved to Golden Harvest where he directed Bruce Lee’s first two mega hits, The Big Boss and Fist of Fury.In additions, He made 3 movies with Wang Yu who was one of the star actors in that time (but also whose star was going off because of new generation star actors); Tattooed Dragon (1973), Seaman No. 7 (1973), A Man Called Tiger (1973). It is said that they were planing a project which Bruce Lee and Wang Yu would be starring together, but it was cancelled becauce of unexpected death of Bruce Lee.

In 1974 he founded the Lo Wei Film Company and directed a half-dozen features with Jackie Chan between 1976 and 1979. Lo’s output slowed down in the 1980’s, but he continued to be involved in motion picture production until his death on 20 January 1996, heart failure.

In bellow, I am presenting my favorite movies by Lo Wei. Note; I didn’t add the movies starring with Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan, because these movie are already too fameous and I wanted to remark Lo Wei’s less well-known movies.
