Magna Carta Mundi, Vintage Map

Magna Carta Mundi literally translated means Great Charter of the World or World Map. This stunning poster is a vintage style Magna Carta Mundi image which is surrounded by detailed, traditional illustrations of months of the year and events that took place in centuries past [popartuk-magna-carta-mundi]. I have some childhood memories about this poster, because I had taken my all breakfast in front of this poster all along my primary and secondary education. I took great pleasure while examining and tring to understanding the detials on it. You may also find this map as poster or puzzle version in internet, or some bookstore … etc. Here in below, I try to give some explanations of parts, to better see wonders in there… Click for detailed map

In the middle, big 2 circles give World Map. In the bottom part of left big circle, there are 2 effigys of Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Magellan, and figures of other explorers, see second figure, in below.

2 small circles between 2 big circles present sky map; Top is north star chart, bottom is south star chart.

4 figures, where are in left and right sides of both small circles, symbolize 4 elements; Left side of top small circle is Earth (Terra), right side of top small circle is Water (Aqua); both illustrated as women. Left side of bottom small circle is Fire (Ignis), right side of bottom small circle is Air (Aer); and these both  illustrated as men.

In the inner corners , 4 seasons are presented; Spring (top-left), Summer (top-right), Autumn (bottum-left) and Winter (bottom-right).

In the outer corners, 4 great rulers in past are presented;

• Left up corner is Ninus; a king of Assyria and the legendary founder of Nineveh, husband of Semiramis.
• Right up corner is Cyrus the Great; King of Persia and founder of the Achaemenid Empire, which is known as First Persian Empire.
• Left bottom corner is Alexander the Great; King of Macedon; conqueror of Greece and Egypt and Persia; founder of Alexandria (356-323 BC)
• Right bottom corner is Julius Caesar; Roman general and statesman. He played a critical role in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire.

In 6 parts of left and 6 parts of right, 12 months are presented as secenes.

In the top wide part of map, continents are symbolized as human figures. Left to right; Asia (as Otoman man appearance), Africa (as black local man), Europa (as woman in fancy dress, I guess), Magallaneca (as sort of local man) and both North and South America (as 2 local men).

In the bottom 7 parts; there are some words and idioms about charity. Left to right, the sentences may be translated as these;

• Haec funt opera charitatis – These are the works of charity
  
• In carcere eram et veniftis ad me – I was in prison, and you saved (!) me
• Aegrotus eram et invifistis me – I was sick and you treated (!) me
• Peregrinus eram et collegistis me – I was a stranger and you took me
• Nudus eram et amicivistis me – I was naked and you clothed me
• Sitivi et de diftis mihi potem – I was thirsty and you could bless (gave water)
• Efurivi et de diftis mihi quod ederem – I was hungry and you could bless (gave food)

Magna Carta Mundi’nin anlamı Büyük Dünya Atlasıdır. Bu posterde ise retro bir dünya atlasının etrafında geleneksel ve ayrıca eğitsel olarak geçmişteki bir takım ayrıntılar olaylar, ve kişiler ressimlendirilmiştir. Bu posterin bende bir nevi çocukluk anısı var. Çünkü ilk ve orta öğretim zamanlarımda kahvaltımı hep bu posterin önünde, ona  bakarak yapardım. İçindeki ayrıntıları tek tek incelemek ve anlamaya çalışmak bana ayrı bir zevk verirdi. Bu posterin puzzle versiyonunu çeşitli kitapçı, kırtasiye ve oyuncakçılarda bulabilirsiniz. Ayrıca posterin kendisi de internetten spariş  edilebilir. Şimdi, aşağıda bu posterin sunduğu bazı ayrıntıları açıklamaya çalışacağım...

Ortadaki 2 büyük dairenin içinde klasik dünya haritası var. Ayrıca soldaki büyük dairenin altında, 2 büyük kaşif Kristof Kolomb ve Ferdinand Macellan‘ın büstüyle birlikte diğer bazı önemli kaşiflerin figürleri resmedilmiştir.

Bu 2 koca dairenin arasında, üstte ve altta duran, 2 küçük daire ise gök atlaslarını gösterir. Üstteki küçük daire kuzey yıldız haritası, alttaki daire ise güney yıldız haritasıdır.

Bu 2 küçük dairenin sağında ve solunda bulunan bölmelerde ise, 4 ana element sembolize edilir. Üstteki küçük dairenin solunda Toprak (Terra), sağında Su (Aqua) kadın figürleriyle çizilir. Alttaki küçük dairenin solunda Ateş (Ignis), ve sağındaki Hava (Aer) erkek şeklinde sunulur.

İçteki köşeler ise (içteki dörtgenin), 4 mevsimi ressimler. Bahar (üst-sol), Yaz (üst-sağ), SonBahar (alt-sol) ve Kış (alt-sağ)

En dıştaki köşelerde ise, 4 büyük hükümdar resimlenir;

• Sol üst köşe Ninus; Bir Asur Kralı, Ninova‘nın kurucusu ve Semiramis‘in kocası.
• Sağ üst köşe Büyük Kiros; Pers Kralı ve ilk Pers İmparatorluğu sayılan Ahameniş İmparatorluğunun kurucusu
• Sol alt köşe Büyük İskender; Makedon Kralı. Yunanistan, Mısır ve Pers fatihi. İskenderiye‘nin kurucusu (356-323 BC).
• Sağ alt köşe Jül Sezar; Romalı General ve Devlet adamı. Roma Cumhuriyeti‘nin Roma İmparatorluğuna dönüşmesinde kritik rolü olmuştur.

Sağ ve solda alt alta dizilmiş 6’şar bölümden, 12 bölüm, yılın 12 ayını resimler.

Posterin en üstteki geniş bölümde, Kıtalar insan şeklinde sembolize edilir. Soldan sağa; Asya (Osmanlı adamı kılığında), Afrika (Siyah yerli olarak), Avrupa (Süslü giysili bir kadın olarak), Magallaneca (bir çeşit yerli adam olarak), Kuzey ve Güney Amerika (2 yerli adam olarak).

Posterin en altındaki 7 bölümde ise; Hayırseverlik ile ilgili sözler ve resimler sunulmaktadır. Soldan Sağa, cümleler, resimlerle paralel olarak, şu şekilde çevrilebilir;

• Aegrotus eram et invifistis me – Hastaydım, bana baktın
